The Billie Sumner Studio/Gallery located in downtown historic Charleston closed after 16 ½ years. During this time, she had a wonderful association with people from across the United States, England, Canada, France, and Australia. Billie has worked with the Cultural Affairs of Charleston in many capacities over the years. Billie was one of the founders for the French Quarter Art Gallery Association.
Billie is a signature member of the S.C. Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, and the International Society of Experimental Painters. Her paintings have won awards and have been accepted in many juried shows across the United States. Recently she was invited to exhibit in the International Challenge of Champion watercolor show in Houston, Texas. She also exhibited in the Hilton Head National show this year. She had an invitational show “Windows to Spoleto” shown in the Historic Dock Street Theater during the 200l Spoleto Festival.
“My contemporary paintings consist of watercolor, collages in water media, and oil monotypes. I am interested in color and design as well as watching a painting come to life on the paper before knowing what the painting will be in the end. It is this excitement and creative process that keep me experimenting with new and different approaches in my work.”
My many visits to Monhegan Island located off the coast of Maine lead me to my first abstract series of ROCKS AND WATER. Visits to Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico inspired me to paint vibrant red paintings. These came to be known as WINDOWS OF LIFE series.
Billie recently opened a new Gallery in Mt. Pleasant with two partners-Tate Nation and Tammy Papa. The Shem Creek Art Gallery is located at 320-C Coleman Blvd. |
